Amarillo Connected

The City of Amarillo’s CIO, Rich Gagnon, presented plans to provide, free, municipal WiFi service. This will build on work already begun by AISD as part of the COVID response, but ithis is part of an initiative that has been in the works for almost a year. Dell, LG, Intel, JAM and Addison Healthcare were in attendance, but final partners should be announced soon.

The plan is for a very rapid rollout with local partnerships helping to reduce cost and extend reach, but funding is already available, including some potential federal funds.

A video of the presentation should be posted publicly soon with more details to come.

We Are Moving!

Hello all!

As you may know, Salesforce has purchased Slack and plans to shut it down. Meanwhile, Meetup.com has changed its pricing to require a $2 fee just to RSVP to attend a meetup.

Just another chapter in the ongoing saga of the dangers of trusting a product over a protocol.

Email still works fine, so we’re moving to a mailing list for announcements and meeting notices. Please sign-up right away at https://amarillotechmeetup.github.io if you would like to continue to be a part of the Amarillo Tech Meetup.

Also, we’ve had some interest in having a virtual meetup, so look for more info via the newsletter as that develops.

Cheers!
Bill

-= Esports Panel =-

In North America, Baseball was the game of the 19th century.

Football exploded onto the scene in the 20th.

The 21st century is shaping-up to be the age of Esports. Our panel brings together representatives from Buff Gaming, Badger Esports and some very special guests. This is your chance to learn more and ask questions.

Be sure to bring a friend if you know someone who’s into gadgets, software, gaming or engineering. If you do bring someone be sure to include your guests when you RSVP so we can plan refreshments accordingly.

Special thanks to the Amarillo College CIS Community for our venue and refreshments.

Our feature photo is a screenshot from “Desert Bus” a game by Teller of Penn & Teller. Arguably the most uneventful game ever created. Now there’s even a VR Version!

It’s been entirely too long since Amarillo Tech Meetup gathered. That is about to change! Tuesday, June 25th, 6PM at Amarillo College, Byrd Business Building, 4th Floor. (Look for the signs pointing you to the correct room.)

What’s on the agenda? Glad you asked.

  2. Dwayne Higgs will talk about the exciting new Code Academy in development at Amarillo college; and
  3. We will be sharing ideas for a new profile site for Tech Meetup Members.

What could be better than all that programming? FREE FOOD! Pizza, salad, drinks, and dessert.

Invite your techie friends and don’t forget to RSVP. We don’t want to run out of food.

Amarillo Tech Meetup: Meeting and Potluck

Hello Techies,

It’s time for our next meetup. If you haven’t been in a while, be sure to come to this one. We’re going to be doing something different.

Please bring something tasty to share and a pen. We’re going to do a potluck, and a fun exercise to crowdsource where we want to go from here. This is your chance to help decide not just what happens in the meetup, but potentially what happens in the world. We have a lot of talent in this region and a lot of good ideas.

We’re out to answer one question: If you could turn this meetup into anything, cost and difficulty aside, what would it be?

When: Tuesday, March 5th – 6:00pm

Where: Amarillo Central Branch Library (across from the Civic Center).

Don’t know what dish to bring? Sign-up on our handy Potluck Planner: https://bit.ly/2t5R4OG
